Fast fix nears for Bangor Hydro glitch

Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. customers who had payments mistakenly deducted twice from their online bank accounts to pay for a single bill should see the mistake resolved today or tomorrow.

An error with its third-party processor, FISC Solutions in Lewiston, led to the double deduction from 4,515 customer accounts, approximately 3% of its customer base, Susan Faloon, spokeswoman for Bangor Hydro, told Mainebiz. Of those affected accounts, 289 are commercial customers.

"Some customers have already received the credit back to their accounts, but for others, it might be later today or tomorrow," she said.

Faloon said a delay in processing a file at the payment processing center in Lewiston late Tuesday caused the mistake. Affected customers will receive a letter from FISC explaining the glitch, she says. Robert Lysaght, a Bangor Hydro vice president, said in a company release that the mistake was not a case of identity theft or fraud, and that no customer information had been compromised.

The error affected customers who sent their checks for payment through the U.S. mail.
