Potato farmers in northern Maine whose crops were damaged by recent storms will receive $400,000 in federal assistance.
The grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency will help approximately 50 farmers who suffered crop damage last month after heavy rains washed away topsoil, reducing the fields' productive yield, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. According to the Bangor Daily News, farmers in the Caribou and Fort Fairfield areas were most affected by the storms and three tornadoes that touched down June 8 and 9, causing $1.2 million in damage in the county.
The senators petitioned for the aid by sending a letter to Acting Administrator of the Farm Service Agency Bruce Nelson. "This funding will help farmers affected by last month's devastating storms repair the damage to their fields and help prevent further losses," the senators said in the release. The funding is an Emergency Conservation Program grant.
