Federal money slated for GE layoffs

Nearly $375,000 in federal aid is slated to help about 65 workers laid off from the GE plant in Pittsfield earlier this year.

The U.S. Department of Labor yesterday announced a National Emergency Grant of $372,839 for laid-off workers at General Electric Security Inc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Electric Co., according to a press release from the DOL. The grant will be operated by the Central/Western Maine Workforce Investment Board and provide workers with basic skills training, career counseling and other re-employment services.

This spring, GE announced more than 100 people would be laid off, but only about 80 layoffs were made, and 11 have since been rehired, according to the Kennebec Journal.
