Feds award $20.8M in affordable housing grants

susan collins Courtesy / Office of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, announced Friday that Maine will receive $20.8 million in federal HUD grants to support affordable housing in the state.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a total of $20.8 million in grants to support affordable housing in Maine.

According to a news release Friday from the office of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the funding includes:

  • $11.6 million in a HUD Community Development Block Grant to the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development;
  • $837,680 in a HUD Community Development Block Grant to the city of Bangor; and
  • $8.4 million in grants to the Maine State Housing Authority, through HUD’s Emergency Solutions Grants program, Housing Trust Fund and HOME program.

The CDBG program provides annual grants to states and local government to develop viable urban communities through housing and economic opportunities. 

The Emergency Solutions Grants program provides annual grants to state, local and private entities to help people quickly regain permanent housing after a crisis. Both the Housing Trust Fund and the HOME program support state housing assistance for low-income families.

Collins is the chairwoman of the Senate Housing Appropriations Subcommittee.

It would be nice to know if there's any kind of oversight to ensure those $20.8 million tax dollars won't be wasted and become yet another example of government pork?
