Feds consider boosting pollock limit

Federal regulators appear poised to allow a fivefold increase in the catch limit for pollock following complaints by ground fishermen.

The National Marine Fisheries Service reported that preliminary findings indicate the annual limit could be raised from 6 million to 35 million pounds a year, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree's office. The consideration of a higher catch limit comes in response to concerns among ground fishermen who are transitioning to a new management system that took effect May 1, under which they are grouped into sectors that are assigned catch limits for various species. Once a quota is reached for one species, all fishermen in the sector must stop fishing for the year.

Federal regulators have not finalized the decision, however, as some news reports indicated. A clarification issued by the fisheries service does not specify when the final report is expected.
