Feds to award $20M for Memorial Bridge

A plan to replace the aging Memorial Bridge between Maine and New Hampshire is receiving a $20 million federal grant, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced today.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told Pingree this morning that New Hampshire's application for the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant funding was approved, according to a press release. New Hampshire filed the application in August, and though Maine was not officially a co-applicant, Gov. John Baldacci did include a letter voicing support for the funding. Pingree has encouraged U.S. DOT officials to fund the bridge project, and the department is expected to officially announce the award next Wednesday, according to the release.

Earlier this month, the governors of Maine and New Hampshire launched a new task force charged with developing a plan to replace the bridge, and the group is expected to propose ways to fund the $200 million-$300 million project by Dec. 15.
