Fire damages Old Town lumber mill

The owner of Stillwater Lumber in Old Town plans to rebuild the sawmill building and replace equipment that was damaged in a fire yesterday.

Tom Bernard, son of business owner Louis "Pete" Bernard, told the Bangor Daily News the fire started shortly before 7 a.m. and appears to have started near a generator in the rear of a building that houses the lumber mill operation. No one was hurt and no inventory was lost, but Bernard said the milling operation is central to the business of the yard, which processes boards, planks and other lumber. Stillwater Lumber's on-site building supply store was not damaged in the fire and Bernard told the newspaper the lumberyard and the building supply store remain open for retail business, including local sales and delivery. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A total of 17 people work at the business, which opened in 1987, and Bernard said employees who have been working in the milling operation likely will be reassigned to other positions until the mill is rebuilt.
