Fire destroys future auction house

A fire in the Penobscot County town of Corinna destroyed an antiques auction and retail business set to open later this year.

The Monday afternoon fire leveled three-quarters of the building, known by locals as "The Auction Barn," and destroyed the antiques and collectibles stored inside, according to the Bangor Daily News. Local entrepreneurs D'Ann and David Ireland, who also own the D&D Discount in Newport, had been renovating the building and planned to open Ireland Auction and Retail this spring. The couple bought the building last fall because their business had outgrown its Newport location, according to the paper.

Several auction companies have operated out of the building. The Irelands told the paper they were unsure what they would do, but did say the building was insured.
