A fire that damaged the Grill Room & Bar in the Old Port late Friday night has been ruled accidental.
According to a press release from the Portland Fire Department, crews responded at 10:20 p.m. to an alarm for a building fire at 86 Exchange St. that houses the Grill Room & Bar and Tandoor.
The crew discovered that the fire was coming from the roof in the rear of the building. The blaze was controlled at 10:56 p.m. and the last units cleared the scene at 12:21 a.m. Saturday.
No injuries were reported and officials say there was a fully functional fire alarm system with working smoke alarms and a sprinkler system throughout the building.
On Saturday morning, a post from The Grill Room & Bar's Instagram site said, “We regret to inform our customers that our restaurant is closed until further notice due to a fire incident. Our priority is always the safety of our customers and staff. We are currently assessing the damage and working with the authorities to investigate the cause of the fire. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding during this difficult time. We will update you as soon as possible on when we will reopen and serve you again. Thank you for your support.”
The fire has been investigated and the cause has been determined to be accidental, originating from cooking sources and extending into the ventilation system.
The Grill Room & Bar opened its doors in 2008. The “urban steakhouse” features a wood-fired grill that cooks up local steaks and seafood. Its sister restaurants are The Corner Room, The Front Room and The Mountain Room.
