First Wind gets OK on 18-turbine project

First Wind will build 18 more wind power turbines in northeastern Hancock County, adding to its adjacent 19-turbine wind farm on Bull Hill.

The Bangor Daily News reported the $110 million project, called Hancock Wind, will include four turbines on the eastern slope of Bull Hill, in Township 16, with the rest on Schoppe and Spectacle Pond ridges, in Township 22. The DEP issued its final approval of the project in a letter last week.

The company says the turbines will have the capacity to generate 3 megawatts each, giving the project a total capacity of 54 megawatts.

David Fowler, senior land manager for First Wind, told the paper that a date to begin construction has not been set and the company still needs to find a buyer for electricity from that project. The company also is seeking a power purchasing agreement for its 50-turbine Oakfield Wind project, approved last April.
