Out of America's top 100 most beloved restaurants in 2022, only three are in New England, including one in Portland, according to a new list from OpenTable, a website where diners can book tables and publish reviews and photos.
Scales, chef-owner Sam Hayward's seafood eatery that first opened in 2016 on Portland's waterfront, is the sole Maine eatery on the list, which includes restaurants in 47 cities across 21 states. Scales is part of a family of restaurants and bakers that includes Street & Company and Fore Street, as well as the Standard Baking Co., Scales says on its website.
The list was compiled based on more than 13 million verified OpenTable reviews collected between Oct. 1, 2021, and Sept. 30, 2022.
"One of my favorite places in Portland!" one diner said in a review of Scales, which was reviewed by 4,473 diners who rated it as "exceptional" with 4.5 stars.
"Enjoy classic fried seafood as well as locally sourced land fare, while enjoying the view of a quintessential working Maine harbor," OpenTable notes in its writeup, which lists the restaurant's seafood stew and oysters as popular dishes.
The other two New England restaurants on OpenTable's latest top 100 list are two Boston establishments, Atlantic Fish and Abe & Louie's. Both are located in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood.
No Maine restaurants were on OpenTable's 2021 list, which included four eateries in Boston and one in Newport, R.I.
Restaurants were listed in alphabetical order rather than ranked. California dominates this year's list with 21 restaurants across Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Newport Beach, San Diego, San Francisco and elsewhere. Illinois is the runner-up with 17 restaurants, all of which are in Chicago – the city with the largest number of restaurants on this year's Top 100 list. They are followed by Florida and Nevada, which are tied at 10 restaurants each, and all 10 Nevada eateries on the list are in Las Vegas.
