Four coastal organizations are receiving a total of $854,000 from the Land for Maine's Future program to preserve working waterfront access.
Great Wass Lobster & Bait Co. in Beals, Quoddy Bay Lobster Inc. in Eastport, J.O. Brown & Son Inc. in North Haven and the South Bristol Fishermen's Co-op will use the money to help support commercial fishing activities, according to a press release. The funds will purchase a working waterfront covenant on each property to restrict future development that conflicts with fisheries use. The four recipients also plan to use the money to improve their facilities. Together, the fishing organizations serve nearly 130 commercial lobster boats and more than 200 fishing families.
The Working Waterfront Access Protection Program is jointly administered by the Maine Department of Marine Resources and the Land for Maine's Future program. Applications for a second round of funding are being accepted until Nov. 7.
