Flu outbreaks already triple last season

The Maine Center for Disease Control reports there have been 32 flu outbreaks so far this year, outpacing last year's report of 10, according to WGME13.

According to the latest report from the Maine CDC, 27 of the 32 outbreaks reported were in long term care facilities. Two outbreaks were reported at a Cumberland and Somerset County school and two others were reported at other institutions — a category that includes workplaces — in Androscoggin and Aroostook counties.

State epidemiologist Stephen Sears told the TV station that it's unknown whether the flu season, which runs through the spring, has peaked or if it might continue to get worse.

Doctors told the station that people should consider getting a flu vaccination and wash hands regularly as ways to prevent catching this year's flu.
