Foes of tax reform bill submit signatures

The group looking to repeal a recent tax reform law turned in over 60,000 signatures Friday in an effort to put a people's veto on the June 2010 ballot.

The coalition, known as Still Fed Up With Taxes, turned in 60,473 signatures to the Secretary of State, about 5,300 more than needed for the veto effort, according to the Kennebec Journal. Led by Republicans, the group opposes the law passed earlier this year that overhauls the state's tax system by lowering the income tax from 8.5% to 6.5% and raising the tax on meals and lodging from 7% to 8.5%, among other changes.

The state must verify the signatures before putting the veto on the ballot. Parts of the law were slated to go into effect in October and in January, but will be put on hold pending verification by the state, according to the paper.
