Portland’s Fork Food Lab is planning several holiday-themed events to get the word out about the shared commercial kitchen and food startup business incubator while helping in the effort to end child hunger in Maine.
At its Small Business Saturday market this week, 17 Fork Food Lab members will peddle edibles from granola to macarons — and Niyat Catering, which specializes in Ethiopian cuisine, will serve a hot lunch.
That will be followed by a December event series called “The 12 Days of Christmas” that will include workshops on gingerbread houses, wreaths and wrapping paper, an Italian cooking class, a South American Happy Hour, and a Dec. 9 session on “How to Start a Business (in 60 Minutes)” by Fyood Kitchen founder Maddie Purcell, a 2018 Mainebiz Next honoree.
“The 12 Days of Christmas is a celebration of Fork being able to stay open and locally run as well as the diversity of the members we have,” Jenn Stein, general manager of Fork Food Lab, told Mainebiz.
Stein said that each event will showcase a different member and something “a little different” from their standard offerings, adding: ”We're excited to offer multiple ways for the community to be involved and see what Fork is all about.”
A portion of the proceeds from the event series will go to Full Plates Full Potential, a charity working to end child hunger in Maine by connecting kids to effective nutrition programs including school breakfasts and lunches. The organization says on its website that one out of every five kids in Main struggles with hunger and aren’t getting the resources they need.
Fork Food Lab is on a drive to boost membership — and reduce debt — since Yarmouth-based nonprofit Sustainability Lab came on as a new investor in October.
Sustainability Lab president Bill Seretta recently told Mainebiz that eight new members had joined Fork Food Lab in the past six weeks to bring the total to around 35, with more to come.
