Former mayor Jenkins mulls gov. bid

Former Auburn mayor John Jenkins is considering running for governor as a write-in candidate.

Jenkins told news channel WCSH 6 he will run as an Independent write-in candidate in November if he can get enough support. He said people around the state have approached him to suggest he run, and a supporter launched a group on the social media site Facebook called "Draft John Jenkins 2B Maine's Governor in 2010." If the group can get 5,000 people to join by Oct. 13, Jenkins said he will campaign as a write-in candidate. As of Aug. 25, the online group had 355 members.

Jenkins, who also served as mayor of Lewiston in the 1990s, successfully campaigned as a write-in candidate for mayor of Auburn in 2007. He has also served as a state senator.
