Former UMS chancellor joins Obama's team

Joseph Westphal, former chancellor of the University of Maine System, has been asked to join President-elect Barack Obama's transition team for the Department of Defense, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Westphal was UMS chancellor from 2002 to 2006. His most recent position was as provost of New School in New York City, a position he held for only three months and stepped down from earlier this week, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. Westphal will join Obama's national security team, which will review the Department of Defense to provide information to the new administration, the Daily News reported.

Westphal is not new to Washington, D.C. Before his arrival in Maine he served as acting secretary of the Army, assistant secretary of the Army in charge of the Army Corps of Engineers and as a senior policy adviser at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to the newspaper.
