Fort Kent business and community leader Kathryn (Paradis) Roy died July 5 after a long battle with breast cancer.
She was 63.
While attending the University of Maine at Farmington, her father asked her to come fill a vacant bookkeeper position at the family business, known as Paradis’ IGA.
Today, the store is part of Paradis Shop 'n Save Supermarkets, a chain of six stores in Fort Kent, Madawaska, Brewer, Caribou, Houlton and Calais.
Over time, Roy climbed the corporate ladder, becoming president of the ownership group. She was also a co-owner and director of the corporation, representing the Roger Paradis family.
In addition to her professional work, Roy volunteered as a director of Acadia Federal Credit Union, the University of Maine at Fort Kent board of visitors and the Northern Maine Medical Center board of trustees, and as director/secretary of the Fort Kent Golf Club.
In 2009, Roy was awarded the Fort Kent Woman of the Year award by the Fort Kent Business & Professional Women organization.
She was an avid golfer with many tournament wins and enjoyed playing softball and volleyball earlier in her life. She also enjoyed traveling with her friends and family, and her favorite destination was said to be her family camp on Eagle Lake.
Roy was born in Fort Kent to Roger and Claudette Paradis on June 4, 1959. She graduated from Fort Kent Community High School in 1977.
Roy is survived by her mother, Claudette Marquis Paradis; her husband of 42 years, Bertrand Roy; son Jason Roy, wife Jenna and their children Landon and Brielle Roy; daughter Katelyn Roy Dubois, husband Tyler and their children Owen and Blake Dubois; and brothers Michael, Daniel, Paul and sister Donna. She was predeceased by her father, Roger Paradis, and a sister-in-law, Louise Audibert Paradis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund.
