Four Maine counties have qualified for federal disaster relief funds to make up costs for the Feb. 8-9 blizzard that set snowfall records across the state.
The Maine Emergency Management Agency reported today that federal officials have approved a disaster declaration for Androscoggin, Cumberland, Knox and York counties, where damage assessments identified over $3.5 million in snow removal and response costs, as well as coastal flooding.
In the town of Cumberland, The Forecaster reported, those costs amounted to over 240 overtime hours just for plowing, exceeding the public works department's entire budgeted overtime expectation of 200 hours.
With the disaster declaration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse municipalities and state agencies for 75% of the costs for at least 48 hours of snow removal. In addition, FEMA will reimburse costs taken for emergency protective measures and infrastructure damage related to the storm.
MEMA says other counties are still assessing blizzard-related costs and could be added to the disaster declaration.
