Free health clinic staves off closure

The Portland Community Free Clinic, which provides free health care to hundreds, has secured $100,000 in donations to save it from closure this year, according to WCSH6.

Mercy Hospital, which had supported the clinic for nearly two decades, announced late last year that it could no longer support the free clinic on India Street, putting its immediate future in question.

The late donations will support the clinic through this year but clinic officials told the TV station that they plan to form a nonprofit organization called Friends of the Free Clinic to raise funds for the clinic in future years.
