Freeport retail development moves ahead

The Boston-based developer of Freeport Village Station has cleared one hurdle in redeveloping another site into a new retail complex.

The Forecaster reported that the Freeport Town Council approved contract zoning for the demolition and reconstruction of 56-58 Main St., which shares the same block as Village Station. Berenson Associates is buying the property from its current owner, George Denney.

Berenson has said that several unnamed retailers will go into a new building that will be constructed on the lot — a building that will be attached to existing ones. The developer sought contract zoning because the building will exceed the 35-foot height limit.

The project still needs to be approved by the Freeport Project Review Board and the town council after being reviewed by the town’s planning board.
