Maine is seeing a range of investment and innovation in the area of health care.
Laurie Schreiber, a Mainebiz senior writer, takes a look at the University of New England’s medical programs, which are now spread between Biddeford and Portland campuses but will come together under one roof by next year.
Construction is underway on UNE’s Harold and Bibby Alfond Center for Health Sciences, a 110,000-square-foot facility that will open in summer 2024. The med school, dental school, nursing program and related health care training will be together in one state-of-the-art space, built at a cost of $93 million. The center, UNE President James Herbert tells Laurie, is “designed for the way medical school is taught today and how we anticipate it will be taught in the future.”
For our cover story, Senior Writer Renee Cordes looks at the growth of Maine’s animal health firms. IDEXX Laboratories, Covetrus and ImmuCell Corp. have been joined by up-and-comers like Rarebreed and Elle Vet Sciences.
Elsewhere, In the On the Record feature, Renee interviews Jayne Van Bramer, president and CEO of the nonprofit Sweetser, a Saco-based behavioral health services provider with 600 employees and a budget of $55 million.
