Whitney Houston, Dean Martin, Lizzo and Taylor Swift on one Spotify playlist? Yes, when you're talking about the walk-up music chosen by the Mainebiz Next Up 40 Under 40 honorees for our celebratory event in November.
Honorees from all corners of the state and a variety of industries proved to be as eclectic as their musical choices, which made for a high-energy event at Portland's Ocean Gateway terminal.
Michelle Anderson, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Maine, went with Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" for her red-carpet entrance. She danced up to the stage to accept her award.
"I love to dance and Whitney's 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody' gets everyone on the dance floor," she told Mainebiz this week.
Musical choices spanned classic crooners to modern pop, wrapping up with Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream" selected by Chris Wolfel, Northeastern University's associate vice president for entrepreneurship and venture creation.
Wolfel said he chose the song for a combination of reasons.
"First, I always remember Tom Petty playing in my house growing up, so there was a bit of nostalgia in the artist," he said. "From there it was which song tied to my personal and professional goals — so 'Running Down a Dream' seemed to fit.
"I feel like I've always been motivated to chase big dreams — and big dreams don't just come, you need to run them down," Wolfel added. "The combination of mindset and nostalgia made it seem like the perfect choice, plus felt like a better fit for this event than my normal country playlist made to be on a boat soaking in the sun."
