GAC to expand in deal with Mexican co.

Searsport-based GAC Chemical plans to break ground on a multi-million dollar expansion in May after being selected as the sole U.S. manufacturer of specialty pigments for a Mexican firm.

GAC says the exclusive manufacturing contract with Dalegip was signed earlier this month. It is Dalegip's first expansion into manufacturing in the United States.

John Wolanski, vice president of sales and marketing for GAC, told Mainebiz Monday that representatives from both companies were in Atlanta at PaperCon, a national pulp and paper industry convention, to line up clients for the new U.S.-produced line of pigments.

As part of the expansion, which is set for completion before the end of this year, GAC expects to hire at least 12 new workers.

Wolanski says Dalegip was partly drawn to Searsport for the ability to easily source water for its 70% water-based pigments. Wolanski says GAC will produce the pigments in a process patented by Dalegip to be sold under that company's name.

Wolanski, who helped lead efforts to create a logistics hub around the company's property in 2011, says it will use expanded truck and rail access to source and distribute its new product later this year.
