Gas prices rise, but are still less than a year ago

In the past week, the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the state rose just short of a dime, bringing the statewide average back to over $2 per gallon.

During that same period, the average national price for a gallon of gas rose 6 cents, according to the popular price tracking website GasBuddy.

The $2.06 statewide average reported on Tuesday is still 35 cents lower than one year ago and lower than in Vermont, which posted an average of $2.07 per gallon. New Hampshire edges both states out with an average price of $1.97.

"The rise in gasoline prices comes as refinery maintenance begins kicking into high gear," said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. "It's not a fun time to be filling up as gasoline prices see their typical seasonal rise. However, this year's jump thus far has seen average prices remain well below year-ago levels across much of the nation."
