GE subsidiary in Pittsfield lays off 30

A Pittsfield subsidiary of General Electric Co. laid off 30 employees this week because of a drop in demand for its products.

General Electric Infrastructure Security, which is based in Florida, employs 480 at two locations in Pittsfield that manufacture fire alarm systems, according to the Bangor Daily News. Joyce Robinson, a company spokeswoman, told the newspaper that a "reduction in orders" forced the company to lay off the 30 temporary workers hired through ADDECO. "This is a very anxious time in our country," Robinson told the paper. "It was an unpleasant but prudent business decision."

Robinson said the company doesn't have plans for future layoffs.
