GE to lay off 110 in Pittsfield

General Electric Security has confirmed it will lay off 110 workers at its plant in Pittsfield, and more than a dozen employees have voluntarily agreed to resign.

The company, the town's largest employer, announced about a month ago that it would need to eliminate "more than 100 jobs" due to rising expenses and weak sales, the Morning Sentinel reported. The cuts will be made across all job classes and most affected employees will work until the week of May 18, the paper reported. All will receive severance pay and benefits.

GE Security currently employs 425 people in Pittsfield. The Pittsfield plant opened in 1956 and manufactures fire-detection equipment, building controls, video surveillance and other security devices and parts.
