Geiger to cut 100 jobs in Lewiston

Geiger, a manufacturer of promotional products and publisher of the Farmers' Almanac, has issued layoff notices to more than 100 factory employees in a move that also ends the company's manufacturing business.

The Sun Journal reported that the cuts reduce Geiger's nearly 300 employees based in Lewiston. Before the layoffs, Geiger had nearly 400 employees and 500 salespeople stationed around the country.

Gene Geiger, the company's CEO, told the paper he believes the layoffs are one of the largest in the company's history.

Geiger said the demand for bound paper products, including planners and calendars, has dropped by about half in recent years, due in part to increasing competition from Asia and the rising popularity of electronic alternatives.

Geiger told the paper he hopes to rehire 25 of the laid-off workers into new positions, and that a buyer might emerge for the manufacturing side of the business.

The company plans to continue producing the Farmers' Almanac and find a local printer to contract for that work.
