In its ongoing effort to be a good neighbor to nonprofits in the two counties it serves, Scarborough-based Town & Country Federal Credit Union has launched a month-long vote for recipients of $25,000 in grants from its Better Neighbor Fund.

The online vote, which runs through Oct. 31 via the credit union's Facebook page and website, lists 25 charitable organizations in Cumberland and York counties that people can vote for once a day.

After the votes are tallied, the eight groups with the highest returns will be announced in a virtual ceremony in early November and receive a combined $25,000 in grants from the credit union.

At 40,000 members, Town & Country is Maine's second-largest credit union.

Since 2010, its Better Neighbor Fund has distributed $250,000 in to support 80 different non-profit initiatives supporting Cumberland and York counties. This year's drive follows a record number of 13,000 votes cast last year, and as many nonprofits face financial hardships during COVID-19.

"We anticipate that online voting will be robust again this year, especially in light of the impact that the pandemic has had on fundraising," said David Libby, Town & Country's president and CEO, in a news release. "Putting which organizations receive the funds into the hands of the voters gives the community a chance to be involved and support important organizations in their communities. Every vote counts."

MCF Waldo County grant

The Waldo County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation is marking the 30th anniversary of its Waldo County Fund by awarding a $3,000 grant to the Game Loft/I Know ME in Belfast for its I Know ME program for youngsters.

The Game Loft/I Know ME works with students ages 6 to 11 in the Mount View School system to raise the aspirations of rural Maine kids by allowing them to explore and learn more about the state.

Maine State Senator Erin Herbig presents Belfast High School student Alex Tripp of Northport with an award as youth volunteer of the year at the Game Loft/I KNOW ME. Tripp put in over 290 hours of community service during the 2018-19 school year and the summer of 2019, much of it as a mentor for children aged 6 to 11 in the I Know ME program.

This year during the pandemic, the organization has created a new online role-playing platform, offering free lunches, and writing postcards to offer smiles and encouragement and stay connected to their members, according to Brenda Harrington, a member of Maine Community Foundation's Waldo County Committee.

"I think it is wonderful to honor the Game Loft/I Know ME with our anniversary grant," she said in a news release.

Patricia Estabrook, the organization's founding co-director, said, “The Game Loft/I Know ME has nurtured kids in the community since 1998, but we have never faced challenges like those presented by the COVID-19 crisis. The grant from the Waldo County Fund will enable us to examine the challenges of today and plan for the opportunities of tomorrow.”

Established in 1990 as a permanent charitable resource, MCF's Waldo County Fund has awarded more than $735,000 in grants to 197 nonprofit organizations in that region.
