He interned with MEGA Industries while still attending school and came to work for the company full time after graduation.

MEGA Industries, a Gorham manufacturer of high-power microwave components, reported record revenues of $12 million, a 32% gain from a year earlier.

The increase was from new contracts with various national laboratories around the world. Clients include defense contractors like Raytheon and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems as well as major research centers, including Michigan State University, the Oakridge National Laboratory, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford and the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center.

Sales are expected to continue at the same pace for the next three to five years, prompting a hiring boom.

The workforce has already increased by 20% in the past year, to 60 employees, the company told Mainebiz. It plans to hire another 12 people as well.

“We continue to add to our workforce with additional high-paying careers,” Peter V. Anania, CEO of MEGA, said in a press release.

Anania said the recent hires include experienced, manual and CNC machinists, experienced and/or entry-level brazing craftsmen; quality control inspectors; a mechanical designer; a mechanical and/or electrical engineer; electrical technicians to work in our world class test lab; and a production control person.

“These positions will either add to our first shift or our newly created second shift,” he said.

Growing international sales

MEGA’s customers are a rarified group: Many are at national laboratories doing research to find new ways of generate energy using cold fusion, how and why certain chemical reactions happen, developing new radiation treatments for cancer and “proving out various hypotheses around the ‘Big Bang’ theory,” the company said.

“These expected orders providing all this growth are real and should continue for the foreseen future,” said William Sanborn, MEGA’s vice president of international sales.

Sanborn said company-wide initiatives, including the push for new high-power (two to 30 megawatts) products like circulators, ultra-high vacuum microwave components, rotary joints and many others are coming to fruition, resulting in orders from overseas and various universities in the United States.

“The MEGA team is committed to the good work it is doing to improve the world’s standard of living while continually improving our engineering and manufacturing processes,” he said. “This is what makes us the world leader in radio frequency solutions here and around the globe.”
