MEGA Industries, a Gorham-based manufacturer, has landed a $2.6 million contract to provide critical parts for a federally funded nuclear research laboratory in Michigan.
Anania & Associates Investment Co. LLC, the Windham-based private equity firm that owns MEGA, announced Monday that the manufacturer will provide microwave components for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University.
The facility is expected to become North America’s largest nuclear research project and serve around 800 of the world’s leading nuclear scientists a year when construction is finished in 2022, the firm said. The U.S. Department of Energy’s nuclear physics arm is funding the project.
Peter Matthews, MEGA’s CEO, said in a prepared statement that “MEGA received the award after a merit-based review and competitive bidding process. The award builds upon recent momentum here at MEGA and opens the doors for future contracts with FRIB as well as other organizations.”
The contract announcement follows news in December that MEGA had acquired a Merrimack, N.H.-based company as part of the manufacturer's "aggressive growth strategy.
Correction: A previous version of the story incorrectly stated that the FRIB's construction will be completed in 2018. It was a sourcing error.
