Gorham tire plant to close

Massachusetts-based Maine Industrial Tire is closing its Gorham plant, leaving 61 people jobless.

The plant in the Gorham Industrial Park manufactures off-road tires for industrial equipment and will likely close by the spring, with its work being sent to other facilities, according to the American Journal, part of Current Publishing. The closure is part of the Wakefield, Mass.-based company's restructuring, which will reduce manufacturing and operating costs by relocating work from Gorham to other plants in Pennsylvania and China. Workers were notified of the impending closure and offered severance, and some have been offered positions within the company. Portland-based Career Management Associates has been tapped to help employees find new jobs, according to the paper.

Maine Industrial Tire began as Maine Rubber in 1949 in Portland, according to the company's website. Later, the company became MITL after acquiring Canada-based Industrial Tires Ltd. and Precision Products Ltd. in 1999, at which point it relocated to Gorham. In 2006, Massachusetts-based GPX International Tire Corp. bought MITL, and filed for bankruptcy in 2009. In January 2010, a group of investors and senior management bought the industrial tire assets, including a Chinese manufacturing facility, from GPX International and renamed the new organization Maine Industrial Tire. Maine Industrial Tire has 850 employees.
