Gov hopeful Hammer loses lawsuit

A Penobscot County Superior Court judge has ruled against gubernatorial hopeful Alex Hammer, who sued the Maine Secretary of State's Office in order to get his name on the November ballot.

In a ruling issued Tuesday, Judge M. Michaela Murphy upheld the state's decision that Hammer failed to submit enough certified signatures to qualify as an Independent candidate, according to the Bangor Daily News. Hammer, of Bangor, sued the state in June, arguing that statutes do not prevent candidates from submitting electronic copies of petitions for verification. As a result, Hammer fell about 800 signatures short of qualifying for the ballot. In her ruling, Murphy called Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap's "interpretation of the petition certification provision...reasonable." Legislation expressly states when electronic forms are accepted, and Murphy said that such an exception is not present for petition forms, according to the paper.

Hammer could not be reached for comment, according to the paper.
