Gov. opposes new highway tolls

A legislative plan to study the feasibility of charging tolls on Maine's highways was panned by Gov. John Baldacci.

Rep. Boyd Marley (D-Portland), chair of the Legislature's transportation committee, said the Maine Department of Transportation is projecting a $2.2 billion funding gap over the next 10 years, according to the Kennebec Journal. The $40,000 preliminary study by the Maine Turnpike Authority will look at the possibility of adding tolls to I-295 from Falmouth to Gardiner and I-95 from Augusta to Houlton to address this shortfall.
