GrandyOats, a Hiram-based maker of organic cereals and snacks, won the “best granola” award in Delicious Living magazine’s fifth annual Best Bite Awards competition.
After decades of success with traditional oat-based granolas, GrandyOats won the award for a new style of organic granola, Coconola, which happens to be grain-free.
"Coconola celebrates the tradition of baked granola, except it's grain-free — which is on trend with the popular Paleo diet and the growing demand for gluten-free snacks," said Aaron Anker, chief granola officer for GrandyOats. "Coconola satisfies the key qualifiers snackers are seeking: certified organic, gluten-free and paleo, non-GMO, small batch, high protein, oil-free, salt-free, kosher, low sugar and socially responsible.”
The final qualifier, he added, benefits from the fact that GrandyOats’ new bakery is powered by 288 solar panels that generate enough clean, renewable energy to produce millions of pounds of granola and offset over 145,000 pounds of greenhouse gases each year. The company, which has 29 employees and is on track for 20% sales growth in 2017, received an Environmental Merit Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this May for its sustainability efforts.
Jenna Blumenfield, senior food editor at Delicious Living, said the magazine called on industry experts to pick the winners featured in the July issue out of 750 entries based on nutrition, ingredients and transparency efforts.
Here’s how the magazine’s judges described GrandyOats’ Coconola in its July issue: “Those who eschew grains can rejoice! Finally, we found a USDA Organic grain-free, paleo granola that delivers on crunch and satiety. A base of organic unsweetened coconut, cashews and pumpkin seeds gives ‘coconola’ its heft, while sesame seeds, honey, maple syrup and vanilla craft exceptional taste.”
