Grant to fund MaineGeneral exit work
A $1.2 million federal grant will pay for the remainder of a new I-95 interchange to service MaineGeneral Medical Center's 192-bed hospital soon to be under construction in Augusta.
The grant from the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation, Community and System Preservation program will fund improvements at exit 113 to allow access to the new hospital, as well as office and retail spaces nearby, according to the Kennebec Journal. The project was one of 19 chosen out of 715 applications to receive more than $1 million in funding. In December, the U.S. Senate scrapped a spending bill that authorized money for a handful of Maine projects, including $4.5 million for the 1-95 exit work. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who wrote to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood to pitch Augusta's application, announced the funding Friday in Augusta.
Other funding for the interchange project includes $6.6 million from the Maine Department of Transportation, $3.2 million from MaineGeneral and $1.2 million from the city of Augusta via a tax increment financing deal. MaineGeneral recently sold more than $280 million in bonds to finance construction of the new hospital.
