Members of the Greater Portland Board of Realtors participated in a youth-led panel hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine earlier this month to shed light on the career of real estate.
The panel was part of the club's Bridge to Success program, which works with members to plan for rewarding futures.
"Real estate is a major interest among our members," said Fayla Sutton, the club's success coach. "Entrepreneurship, flexibility and hard work are all skills they have learned from their time in the club and can readily translate to real estate."
Club members between the ages of 16 and 22 prepared questions and discussion points for the realtors, who led the group in a conversation about what it takes to become a realtor. Everything from getting a license to closing on a house was discussed.
The Realtors shared their personal experiences and things they wished they had known as they began their careers.
"I wouldn't want to be doing anything else," said Lisa DiBiase, Greater Portland Board of Realtors president. "The engagement from the kids was so incredible and reminded me why I am genuinely excited to go to work every day."
Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine is often the first step for many children on the path to achieving their educational, professional and aspirational goals. Many members lack the necessary support at school and home for navigating the transition from high school to college or careers.
The Bridge to Success program is the club's latest initiative to ensure members have the tools they need to thrive in their future careers, whether entering the workforce, starting college, or beginning apprenticeships. The program targets all age levels, elementary through two years after graduating high school, to help young people discover their passions and build fulfilling futures.
"Hearing from real people who have built successful careers, like the Greater Portland Board of Realtors members, makes the future less intimidating and helps build social capital,” said Sutton.
“Participating in events such as these are incredibly important to us,” said DiBiase.
The Greater Portland Board of Realtors runs an annual toy drive for the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine in addition to other charitable work in its community.
This panel was the first of many for BGCSM’s Bridge to Success program. Anyone interested in learning more about the program and ways to be involved should contact Fayla Sutton at fsutton@bgcmaine.org.
