The Dunstan School Restaurant, a former schoolhouse that is highly visible on Route 1 in Scarborough, will be converted into a natural foods grocer after having been sold recently.
The Current reported that the Thurlow family, which turned the schoolhouse into a restaurant 30 years ago, sold the two-story, 13,500-square-foot property to Exeter, N.H.-based natural foods grocer On the Vine Marketplace, which first opened in 2006. While the sales price was not disclosed, a listing price had the building valued at $1.6 million.
The Dunstan School Restaurant closed last month.
On the Vine Marketplace co-owner Abel Schultze and business partner Scott Edwards told the newspaper they plan to open the new grocery store by April. Schultze said they chose Scarborough for the company’s first expansion because the city “can support a business like ours. It’s a place where people care about their food.”
