Guv and co. leave for Asian trade mission

Governor John Baldacci and about 30 representatives of Maine's business community left Saturday for a six-day trade mission to South Korea and Japan, two of Maine's top five biggest trading partners.

The gubernatorial trade mission -- the first to Asia since Gov. Angus King visited Taiwan and Hong Kong in 1999 -- hopes to build upon Maine's growing trade with South Korea and Japan, which received $111.9 million and $128.6 million in exports from Maine in 2006, according to the Maine International Trade Center, which helped organize the mission. Today, Japan and South Korean are Maine's fourth and fifth largest export partners.

Participants in the trade mission, who will have opportunities to meet with potential Japanese and South Korean business partners, include Eastman Industries in Portland, The Baggler Co. in Augusta, Maine Distilleries in Freeport, Atwood Lobster Co. in Spruce Head and Portland law firm Preti Flaherty. York County Community College, Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft and the University of Southern Maine School of Business also sent representatives to recruit students.
