Guv's wood panel issues recommendations

Gov. John Baldacci on Friday received a report from his Wood-to-Energy Task Force that promotes the use of wood to heat more Maine homes.

The report says a 10% shift from oil to wood would help Maine homes reduce their reliance on heating oil, which is now used by 80% of Maine homes for heating, the Associated Press reported. The 28-member task force is recommending the state issue tax incentives of a "buy-back" program to help homeowners and small businesses replace their older furnaces, boilers or stoves with cleaner wood-burning equipment. It also suggests the state provide financing to the wood harvest industry to modernize operations, the Kennebec Journal reported.

The panel is chaired by Les Otten, who has been accused of using his position of the panel to further his business interests. Otten recently launched a wood pellet boiler business in Maine called Maine Energy Systems.
