Hackers hit Downeast Energy
A security breach at Downeast Energy and Building Supply has exposed banking information of hundreds of customers and cost the company $150,000, the Maine Public Broadcasting Network first reported yesterday.
The Brunswick-based company fell victim to an email "phishing scam" that gave hackers access to one of Downeast's KeyBank accounts, according to a statement posted on the company's website. The hackers transferred no more than $150,000 from the account and potentially viewed the private bank information of about 800 customers who make automatic electronic deposits. The hackers, apparently in eastern Europe, sent an email to a Downeast employee posing as KeyBank, with a link to a website asking for the company's bank-issued username and password, according to the Portland Press Herald.
Downeast has sent letters to customers who may have been affected by the breach and plan to follow up with phone calls to each customer, according to the statement.
