Hampden workers notified of USPS consolidation
Employees at the U.S. Postal Service facility in Hampden said they have received notification that the center's processing operations will be consolidated in Scarborough, leading to the loss of 170 jobs. But a USPS spokesman said he was "unable to confirm this information."
Eastern Maine Processing and Distribution Facility employees told the Bangor Daily News they were informed last night that the USPS on May 19 will move processing to the Southern Maine Processing and Distribution Center in Scarborough, reducing the Hampden facility's work force from 183 to 13. It was unclear who delivered the announcement. But Tom Rizzo, spokesman for the USPS Northern New England District, did not verify the information. He said the USPS is finalizing its study into its mail processing operations with plans to announce final decisions by the end of the month. In September, USPS released a nationwide plan to close rural post offices and consolidate operations in order to cut $20 billion in operating costs by 2015 to make a profit. USPS would save more than $7.5 million annually if it reduced operations at the Hampden facility.
Deb Essler, Northern New England district manager for the Postal Service, told Mainebiz in January that consolidating Maine processing services would lead to a net reduction of about 40 jobs.
