Hancock Gourmet Lobster Co. may call the little village of Cundy's Harbor home, but it's making a big name for itself with a recent win at a national gourmet food trade show.
The company nabbed three gold awards at the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade's July food show in Washington, D.C., becoming the first company ever to win a trio of the awards in one year, according to a press release. This event is the largest annual specialty food convention in the country and hosts the Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation, or sofi, Gold Awards, considered the most prestigious award in the specialty food industry.
Hancock Gourmet Lobster received the coveted best product line recognition at the show. "Winning for an individual product is really big, but winning for best product line is huge," founder and President Cal Hancock said in the release. The company, which also operates a production facility in Topsham, won individual gold awards for its lobster risotto on the half shell and its Orr's Island Oyster Stew. Founded in 2000, Hancock Gourmet Lobster won its first sofi gold award in 2003, and last year was recognized for its Port Clyde Lobster Mac and Cheese and its Linekin Bay Lobster Corn Chowder.
This year's award winners were selected from more than 2,200 entries in 33 categories. Two other Maine companies also brought home accolades: Stonewall Kitchen in York won a gold award for its roasted peach whiskey sauce and Sullivan Harbor Farm Smokehouse in Hancock Village won for its Dave's bacon smoked salmon product.
