Hancock Lumber will build a lumber yard and kitchen design showroom on 11 acres in Saco, a project expected to be completed in spring 2020.
At 941 Portland Road, which is U.S. Route 1, it will be Casco-based Hancock Lumber’s 15th location in Maine, and will include a 30,000-square-foot kitchen showroom and retail area and a 30,000-square-foot lumber yard.
The company expects to add 30 employees at the new site, Erin Plummer, vice president of marketing and communications, told Mainebiz Friday.
It will be Hancock Lumber’s first entirely new lumberyard since 2004, when it opened the Bridgeton location. The last major lumber yard expansion it did was in Kennebunk in 2012.
The company recently acquired the property, north of the intersection with Cascade Road, and the former site of the Cascades Restaurant & Cabins.
The nearest Hancock Lumber location is 20 miles south, in Kennebunk, and there’s another 23 miles north on Main Street in Yarmouth, where the company recently opened a kitchen design showroom across the street from its retail location.
In 2016, a new 30,000-square-foot showroom opened in Kennebunk, where the company has had a presence for decades.
Plummer said the Saco location will give the company contiguous coverage of northern York and southern Cumberland counties.
“It’s a great area,” she said of the Saco site. “It’s a sweet spot, at a crossroads [near Interstate 95].”
In a Thursday news release, the company said, “For decades Hancock Lumber has covered the market from Scarborough to Biddeford; however, a permanent presence with a dedicated store and sales team will improve service and provide even greater access and faster deliveries into these markets.”
The company said the new site “is the hub of continued economic development, is highly visible, and offers exceptional access to Scarborough, [Old Orchard Beach], Biddeford and I-95.”
With the Saco location, Hancock will have 15 lumber yards and seven kitchen design showrooms, as well as sawmills, a truss manufacturing facility and home office.
Plummer said the company has been working with the Saco planning department, though has not gone before the city for official action yet, Plummer said. “We expect it to be a smooth process.”
The city is “thrilled that Hancock Lumber has chosen Saco for their business expansion,” Denise Clavette, planning and development director said in the news release.
“Hancock Lumber will be joining the development surge happening along our Route 1 opportunity zone, joining businesses representing multiple industries and sectors,” Clavette said.
The release said the new location opens up opportunities for new relationships to be established with builders, remodelers, and homeowners in the Saco market.
President Kevin Hancock said the company has been working with builders and homeowners in the greater Saco community for decades.
“Our new store will allow us to serve those clients even better and connect more broadly with the construction industry in the region,” he said.
