Health care consumer group sues Maine’s DHHS

Consumers for Affordable Health Care, a consumer health advocacy group, has alleged that Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services has violated state law because it has not contracted with a nonprofit to assist health program applicants, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The advocacy group had held the $200,000 state contract for such services, which included assisting applicants to apply for Medicaid, MaineCare and other health programs, from 1999 until last year. It said the lack of a contract violates state law. A group of lawmakers in early December also said ending the program violated state law, according to the BDN.

The consumer group asked a Kennebec County Superior Court judge to either order the DHHS to put out a contract for bid or restore its contract.

The BDN said a DHHS spokeswoman had not seen the complaint Monday morning and could not immediately comment on it.
