The technology organization that manages the state's health information network is aiming to improve care for Mainers in long-term care facilities with the addition of an electronic health record system.

HealthInfoNet, headquartered at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, said it will soon finish connecting nursing homes and other facilities with a cloud-based EHR system, PointClickCare, developed in Canada.

The system requires that all admission, discharge and transfer information from long-term care facilities, that are contracted with a Medicare Advantage Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plan network, to be provided to HealthInfoNet. “Dual-eligible” refers to Medicare plans whose beneficiaries also have Medicaid coverage.

The requirement will allow greater care coordination for high-risk individuals, according to a news release.

Beginning this spring, facilities that will be sharing data through PointClickCare include Continuum Health Services, First Atlantic Health Care, National Healthcare Associates, Pinnacle Health and Rehabilitation, Covenant Health and MaineHealth.

Across the U.S., PointClickCare is used by more than 25,000 long-term post-acute care providers and over 2,700 hospitals, enabling care collaboration and delivery, as well as business intelligence and financial performance functions.

HealthInfoNet is an independent, nonprofit organization using information technology to improve patient care quality and safety.
