The Maine Heritage Policy Center in Portland has named a new CEO to replace Tarren Bragdon. Lance Dutson, of Portland, will begin as head of the conservative think tank starting Aug. 8.
Dutson has been active in the public policy arena at both the state and federal level, according to a press release from MHPC. He served as online communications consultant for U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, as well as communications director for the Maine Republican Party and, most recently, communications director for Maine Speaker of the House Robert Nutting. He is also the founder of a political blog, Maine Web Report. He has been featured on Fox News and New England Cable News and has lectured on new media issues and politics at a handful of educational institutions.
In addition to overseeing MHPC's existing initiatives, Dutson plans to expand efforts to increase government accountability by identifying waste and mismanagement in the state and to strengthen outreach strategies to better educate Maine citizens about how policies will affect them.
Dutson was chosen after a nationwide search. Bragdon resigned in May to launch a new free-market think tank in Naples, Fla. Staff members of the Maine Heritage Policy Center write a column for Mainebiz, in rotation with the Maine Center for Economic Policy, called Public Engagement.
