Boatbuilding company The Hinckley Co. is hiring back workers it laid off in 2008 and 2009, thanks to a boost in orders.
The Southwest Harbor-based company has rehired about 100 people at its boatbuilding plant in Trenton and 35 people at its waterfront facility in Manset this year, according to the Republican Journal. The company has 23 power yachts in production or on order, compared to just two or three on order six months ago, Vice President of Sales Phil Bennett told the paper. "We're cautious; we're slowly adding people," he said.
The company laid off 50 workers from its Trenton facility in the fall of 2008, cutting its staff by 9%. Hinckley cut 25 people in January 2009 and then laid off 26 more in April 2009, amid concerns that the facility might have to be shut down temporarily until the economy improved. Hinckley began rehiring employees last fall.
