Hiring freeze imposed at JAX Labs

Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor announced a hiring freeze on Jan. 23.

The mammalian genetics research center, the largest employer in Hancock County, will only fill jobs that are mission critical or funded by research grants, according to the Mount Desert Islander. The move, which was announced in a memo to employees last week, is the result of recession-related losses whittling the lab's endowment down from $80 million to around $50 million and a decline in mice sales.

The hiring freeze covers the Bar Harbor campus, which currently employs 1,323, and the lab's 80-person campus in Sacramento, Calif. The freeze is expected to remain in place through at least May 31, the paper reported.
