Hospital issues competing proposal

Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick has proposed a $3.5 million upgrade to compete with a proposal by Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston to acquire Parkview Adventist Medical Center, also in Brunswick.

In a letter of intent filed Tuesday with the State Department of Health and Human Services' Certificate of Need Unit, Midcoast President and CEO Herbert Paris said the project would "avoid the costly duplication that CMHC is proposing," according to The Times Record in Brunswick. Bob McCue, Midcoast's vice president of finance, told the paper the $3.5 million would include upgrades to the hospital's urgent care capacity, and its radiology and laboratory equipment, and would cost significantly less than the $18.5 million a year it would cost for Central Maine Healthcare to operate Parkview.

CMHC and Parkview in March signed letters of intent to make Parkview a wholly owned subsidiary of the health care system, but must obtain a Certificate of Need from the state before the deal can become final.
